How to spot a fake Pokémon card: a safe first check

Confirm that the exact card exists

Search the set and collector number in a trusted catalogue. Check that the artwork, rarity, attacks, language and finish match a real printing. Many obvious counterfeits combine details from different cards.

Compare print and layout

• Font shape, weight and spacing
• Energy symbols and weakness or resistance icons
• Border thickness and centering
• Colour balance on the front and back
• Copyright line, set symbol and collector number

Check texture and foil carefully

Modern premium cards may use specific texture patterns and foil directions. A flat rainbow shine, missing texture or foil in the wrong areas can be suspicious, but use a verified copy from the same printing as the reference.

Avoid destructive internet tests

Do not rip, bend, soak or scratch a card to test it. Layer and light tests are frequently oversimplified and vary across legitimate print runs. Destructive checks can turn a genuine card into a damaged one.

Escalate valuable or uncertain cards

For an expensive purchase, ask for high-resolution photos, provenance and buyer protection. If doubt remains, use a reputable local shop or authentication service before completing the transaction.
